Sunglasses -They Aren’t just for the Beach

Posted by

Eye ProtectionWhen you think of sunglasses, what do you see? Sandy beaches? Rollicking waves? Bikinis, one-pieces and board shorts? Many people associate sunglasses with summer and all the fun that warm-weather season brings. However, a pair of sunglasses is actually an important tool for protecting your eyes any season of the year. From damaging UV rays to cruel whipping winds, here are a few reasons to wear your sunglasses every day.

Sunglasses protect you from debris and dry eyes. Whenever you are outdoors, wind can whip debris into your face and sting your eyes. Sunglasses provide some measure of protection from flying debris as well as act as a barrier between your delicate eyes and the harsh, drying wind.

Sunglasses protect your eyes (and the skin around them) from sun damage. UV rays are harmful, so it’s important to wear sunglasses whenever you are outside, driving your car, or riding public transportation. Unprotected exposure to UV rays can lead to vision problems including the development of cataracts. UV rays also contribute to early signs of aging, so wear sunglasses now and you can avoid expensive cosmetic surgery procedures later in life.

Sunglasses protect you from sun blindness. UV rays bounce off cement and asphalt roads and right into your eyes as you drive. Not only does this make driving difficult due to sun blindness, but it also increases UV exposure to your eyes. Wearing sunglasses while driving prevents sun blindness while protecting your vision.

If you wear contact lenses, adding a pair of sunglasses isn’t too much of a problem. If you wear eyeglasses, you’ll need to invest in a pair of prescription sunglasses in addition to your regular eyewear. This can be expensive as well as a hassle, especially when traveling. Some companies, such as Fitovers Eyewear from Australia, have developed sunglasses that can be worn over prescription eyewear. However, you’re still required to tote around multiple frames.

The easiest way to enable patients to wear sunglasses every day is with laser vision correction. By eliminating reliance on contact lenses or other corrective eyewear, LASIK makes wearing sunglasses convenient again. There’s no need for multiple pairs of eyewear. There’s no need for bothersome contact lenses. Patients can enjoy the outdoors year-round while protecting their eyes from debris, wind and harmful UV rays with a single pair of stylish frames.
